You are allowed to travel to Ukraine if you have temporary protection based on humanitarian grounds and it will not affect your ability to renew the permit.

If you stay abroad for more than three consecutive months, your residence permit can be cancelled. The residence permit will automatically be cancelled if your domicile has been registered abroad for a period of three months.

If your residence permit is revoked on these grounds, it is possible to apply for a renewal of the permit, if it is done within the validity period of the previous residence permit and if justifiable reasons support it.

Transfers of legal domicile from Iceland should be reported to Registers Iceland. It is possible to notify the authority on their website with your digital certificate if you are already in Ukraine and do not intend on returning to Iceland. If you decide to return to Ukraine permanently and you receive reception allowance, you will no longer receive reception allowance.

If you decide to leave Iceland permanently, you can either notify Registers Iceland on their website with your digital certificate or go to their office in Borgartún 21, 105 Reykjavik, with valid identification.

If you wish to return to Iceland after travelling back to Ukraine permanently, you can re-enter and apply for temporary protection again. It is not certain that you will qualify for collective protection if you apply again after your return to Iceland.

• Valid child’s travel document
• Crew member ID card/seaman ID card
• Certificate for return to Ukraine

If your biometric passport has expired, you can extend it at the nearest Ukrainian embassy.

You can also apply for a special travel document issued by the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration to travel, if necessary.

Those who have been granted temporary protection on humanitarian grounds in Iceland can apply for a special travel document for travel abroad. Please note that the travel document is only issued if an applicant can demonstrate that they are not able to obtain a travel document from their own country.

To return to Ukraine you will need to obtain a certificate for return or other suitable identification documents.

Yes, in Iceland, every patient has the right to receive copies of their medical record which can include information on all your medical visits, diagnostic, medical treatments, nursing care, and other type of clinical information.  To obtain these documents, please contact the relevant healthcare provider directly.

You will need to obtain a disability certificate issued in Ukraine. It can be done on arrival or remotely – please check the instructions on the governmental portal.

Please note that even if your disability certificate obtained in Ukraine has expired, the document is automatically extended and is considered valid until 6 months after the end of martial law in Ukraine.

Minors are not allowed to travel without a custodian or their permission. If you are a child living in Iceland without your parents or other family members, please discuss your wish to return to Ukraine with your contact person or guardian.

Please discuss your wish and plans to return to Ukraine with the school where your child(ren) is/are enrolled. The school will be able to inform you of the steps to take for deregistration and of the documents and reports the school may or may not be able to provide.

If you decide to return to Ukraine permanently, please contact Iceland Revenue and Customs. They will assist you with your tax obligations if you have any. You may visit one of their offices, contact the office online or call +354 442-1000.

If you decide to return to Ukraine permanently, you may want to close your Icelandic bank account. Even an unused account may charge you for costs. In Iceland, depending on the bank, different rules apply for closing a bank account. Some may allow you to close your account online or through a phone call, and others may require you to contact your bank in person. It is good to reach out to your bank and ask which rules apply.

If you decide to return to Ukraine permanently, you should contact the Icelandic Social Insurance Administration (Tryggingastofnun, TR) to review your social insurance contributions, entitlements and any potential benefits accrued during your time in Iceland. During the martial law in Ukraine the procedure of entry with pets is simplified.  The pet must have:

• An identification document issued by the EU member state – pet passport or international veterinary certificate.
• Microchip
• Vaccination against rabies.
