Please note that the temporary protection status in Denmark has been extended under the Special Act until 17 March 2026. If you were granted a residence permit under the Special Act, the Immigration Service will automatically assess whether your residence permit can be extended before your current residence permit expires.

Short and extended stay in Ukraine
If I decide to return to Ukraine for a short visit, what will happen to my temporary protection status?
Please consult the information published on Danish authorities’ official websites to make sure that you receive the most updated information. Once you have been granted a residence permit under the Special Act, you can leave on equal terms with other foreign nationals who have a residence permit in Denmark. When you hold a residence permit under the Special Act, you may return to your home country for a period. You can therefore travel to Ukraine without this having any consequences for your residence permit. If you travel abroad for extended periods, you may risk lapsing of your residence permit. However, this does not apply if you have left for Ukraine with a so-called worthy purpose. It may, for instance, be to perform Ukrainian military service, perform relief work, or other humanitarian work, either as an affiliate of a humanitarian organization or on your own. It may also be to help family or other relatives out of Ukraine.
If I return to Ukraine for visit but decide to remain in Ukraine for good, how can I inform the authorities in my country of asylum?

You can deregister from the Civil Registration System (CPR) in the self-service using MitID. It can be done as early as 4 weeks before your departure and until 5 days after. If you report your departure later than that you will be fined DKK 1,000 (2024).
If I decide to return to Ukraine permanently, what will happen to my temporary protection status?

Once you have been granted a residence permit under the Special Act, you can leave on equal terms with other foreign nationals who have a residence permit in Denmark. When you hold a residence permit under the Special Act, you may return to your home country for a period. If I decide to return to Ukraine permanently, whom should I inform?
You have to report that you are leaving Denmark to the Civil Registration Office. Please consult the information published on Danish authorities’ official websites to make sure that you receive the most updated information.
If I decide to return to Ukraine permanently, can I deregister and inform the relevant authorities in the country of asylum online or should I go in person?

You can deregister from the Civil Registration System (CPR) in the self-service using MitID. It can be done as early as 4 weeks before your departure and until 5 days after. If you report your departure later than that you will be fined DKK 1,000 (2024). If you do not have MitID, you can book an appointment with Citizen Service, and you can fill in a departure form and submit it to your municipality of residence.
If I decide to return to Ukraine permanently, what will happen to the assistance that I am receiving in the country of asylum Denmark?

Leaving Denmark entails a number of changes to your rights. When you have been registered in the Danish Civil Registration System (CPR) as relocated to another country, you simultaneously lose your social security in Denmark. The rights that you lose are for instance the right to sick insurance, maternity allowance, unemployment pay, child benefits, pension etc. Before you leave Denmark, you should check which social security rights you will have in the country to which you are moving.
Can I travel back to Ukraine permanently and re-enter Denmark if/when I want to?

You must have a valid residence card to re-enter Denmark after a stay abroad. If you have not yet received your residence card, you must obtain a re-entry permit. You can apply for a re-entry permit at the Immigration Service.

I am of a nationality other than Ukrainian, I used to live in Ukraine before the way however I fled due to the war, can I return to Ukraine?
If you are not a citizen of Ukraine and you are staying in Denmark with a visa, you can return to Ukraine using your residence permit in Ukraine. If your residence permanent permit in Ukraine has expired, you should contact the Ukraine authorities in Denmark to verify whether you need to extend your resident permanent. Is it allowed to return to Ukraine without an international passport?
Ukrainian citizens can enter Ukraine with one of the following documents:
- Passport of a citizen of Ukraine for travel abroad (International passport)
- Diplomatic passport of Ukraine
- Service passport of Ukraine
- Seaman’s identity card
- Crew member’s certificate
The internal passport (ID card) is not included in this list. Therefore, it cannot be used to return to Ukraine. Instead, it is necessary to issue either an international passport or a certificate for returning to Ukraine. The conditions and deadlines for the production of these documents vary.
A certificate for returning to Ukraine grants the right to enter Ukraine. This document is issued by diplomatic missions or consular institutions of Ukraine abroad.
A certificate for returning to Ukraine is issued by a foreign diplomatic institution (embassy/consulate of Ukraine abroad) on the day of application. The production of this document is usually a paid service.
An international passport can currently be issued at the Embassy of Ukraine in the Kingdom of Denmark. However, when ordering this service, it should be noted that the process of producing and issuing an international passport lasts from 3 to 6 months. The production of this document is a paid service.
I do not have any identification documents – can I return to Ukraine?
If you or your relatives plan to return to Ukraine, but do not have a valid passport (the passport has expired, lost your passport or arrived in Denmark only with an internal passport or birth certificate), then you need to obtain a document from the consulate of Ukraine that will allow you to cross the border.
To do this, you need to contact the nearest consular office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and issue a certificate of return to Ukraine (the so-called “white passport”). I have disability document/ID in Denmark, will it be recognized in Ukraine?

Education and child protection
My child(ren) is/are enrolled in school, do we need to take any specific steps before returning to Ukraine?
Please consult the information published on Danish authorities’ official websites to make sure that you receive the most updated information. Before you leave Denmark, you should notify your child’s daycare facility, school, after-school scheme or other care arrangement that you are going to leave. The term of notice is generally 1 month. Many places demand a written notice in advance. In some cases you can deregister from municipal childcare services online.
Ask for an official document acknowledging your child’s educational achievement that will facilitate recognition of the qualifications in Ukraine. More information on what information the document should include can be found on the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science’s webpage.
Can an unaccompanied child (below 18) return to Ukraine on their own?
Citizens of Ukraine cannot be denied entry to Ukraine under no circumstances. Children are subject to the same entry and exit control as adults. Please refer to State Border Guard Service of Ukraine for detailed information. Those crossing the border should have a passport or other document confirming their identity or at least a birth certificate. Children can cross the border with a birth certificate issued abroad.
In case there are no documents, in all countries apart from those where consular relations are ceased (i.e. Russian Federation), children would need to be assisted in obtaining a return certificate based on any documents that can confirm connection to Ukraine (and possessing its citizenship). Consulates may issue a return certificate based on copies of documents.
If a child is entering alone or with a non-parent adult, State Border Guard Service of Ukraine shall contact local child protection services, unless they have information about parents awaiting the child. It is advised to inform the Border Guard post that the parent is expecting the child on the Ukrainian side of the border in advance.
Please note that a child should also meet the exit requirements of the host country – please contact your local Ukrainian consulate to ask for information and get the required documents for return. In some cases, a birth certificate cannot be used as a travel document.

How to sort out my bank account if I decide to return to Ukraine permanently?

You should notify your Danish bank of your move from Denmark. Make sure you keep your account open for approximately 1 year or at least until the next tax assessment is available from the Danish Tax Agency.
How to sort out my social insurance in Denmark if I decide to return to Ukraine permanently?

What are my tax obligations if I decide to return to Ukraine permanently?

When you leave Denmark, your job and your place of residence determine where you have to pay tax. It is recommended that you call the Tax Agency on +45 72 22 27 80 once you have deregistered from the Civil Registration System (CPR) and left Denmark.
How can I check for my pet documentation if I want to return to Ukraine permanently?
