Studying under the Ukrainian studies component
Schoolchildren living outside Ukraine have the opportunity to study under “the Ukrainian Studies component” programme.
What is the Ukrainian Studies component?
The Ukrainian Studies component is a shortened educational programme for schoolchildren, which allows reducing the academic demands on students who study full-time in the host country and at the same time get online education in Ukraine. This includes subjects that are not taught abroad: Ukrainian language, Ukrainian literature, history of Ukraine, geography, Defense of Ukraine, fundamentals of law. Students will be able to study under this programme, and those subjects that are not included in the Ukrainian Studies component can be transferred from schools abroad.
What are the advantages of studying with a Ukrainian studies component?
First of all, it is an opportunity to maintain a connection with Ukraine through studying in Ukrainian schools, communicating with peers and teachers. In addition, students will be able to receive documents about Ukrainian education without the overload of full-time study in two schools at the same time.
Studying under the Ukrainian Studies component involves:
- fewer hours than the full programme (6–8 hours, depending on the year of study);
- teachers can adapt the shortened program to students’ needs;
- Educational institutions can organize schedules that do not overlap with studies at schools abroad.
To help teachers who will teach under the Ukrainian studies component programme, the Ministry of Education and Science, together with the Ukrainian Institute of Educational Research, have compiled a selection of online educational content developed over the past few years to provide online learning. These include educational videos, project tasks, and final tests that can be used in class or for students to work on independently.
The selections of educational materials were formed in accordance with the Recommendations on the use of modified programmes in the Ukrainian language, Ukrainian literature, history of Ukraine, and geography for general secondary education institutions.
